7 Helpful Teeth-Whitening Tips

A million dollar smile or dazzling pearly whites is an asset most people long to possess. While it’s true that numerous teeth whitening procedures are very much available at your disposal, not many of us have the means or resources to take advantage of such avant-garde dental treatments.

In line with this, here are a few helpful yet affordable remedies to achieve that megawatt smile you have always wanted.

  1. Consume water after every meal.

Make it a habit to swish your mouth with water after eating or even after drinking wine, regardless if it’s white or red. White wine contains acids that go into the enamel, thereby easily allowing staining to take place.

  1. Swish with apple cider vinegar.

Vinegar contains powerful properties that help remove stains, bleach teeth and get rid of bacteria present in the mouth and gums. Make it a habit to gargle with apple cider vinegar every morning before you brush your teeth.

  1. Utilise a straw when drinking.

As much as possible, try to drink a can of soda, iced tea or any other coloured drinks with a straw. This way, you can minimise contact of the aforementioned coloured beverages with your pearly whites.

  1. Use baking soda as alternative toothpaste.

Due to its bleaching capabilities, sodium bicarbonate or baking soda can help you achieve a beaming smile as it helps reduce the chances of teeth discolouration. However since baking soda can be too abrasive, in some instances, it can do damage to the teeth’s enamel. In line with this, it will be prudent to use this toothpaste alternative sparingly. At least once a week will suffice.

  1. Include crunchy fruits and vegetables in your diet.

An apple a day keeps teeth stains at bay! Fruits and vegetables are naturally abrasive. That being said, munching on apples, pears and other fruits and vegetables can effectively help get rid of unsightly teeth discolouration.

  1. Floss.

Bacteria and plaque can get stuck in between your teeth. Brushing your pearly whites may not be enough. With that in mind, make it a point to include flossing in your regular teeth cleaning regimen. Ideally, it will be a good idea to floss at least twice daily — in the morning and before going to bed.

  1. Chew sugarless gum.

Your salivary glands tend to wither and emit less saliva as you age. Sugarless gum helps neutralise pH levels in the mouth and at the same time enhances saliva production. And since saliva is one of the body’s natural cleansers, it can help keep the mouth clean.

Aside from following one, two or all of the following teeth whitening tips, make sure to visit your dentist at least twice a year to have your teeth’s overall condition checked.
